Conferences
Genealogy conferences provide excellent skill-building opportunities and advanced methodology learning for specific regions. Look for classes taught by credentialed professionals. These learning opportunities may take place virtually or in person.
- Genealogy Jamboree hosted by the Southern California Genealogical Society, is normally held in June in Burbank, California.
- The NGS Family History Conference, sponsored by the National Genealogical Society (NGS), features many skill-building lectures and region-specific presentations. The conference is normally held in May.
- The Association of Professional Genealogists hosts the annual Professional Management Conference and addresses topics of interest to professional genealogists.
- RootsTech, sponsored by FamilySearch, hosts in-person and virtual events each spring. RootsTech provides registrants with a free video library of many recorded presentations for several years after the event.
Institutes
Institutes provide in-depth learning in specific regions, record types, or methodologies. These learning opportunities take place virtually and in person.
- Genealogical Institute on Federal Records (Gen-Fed), National Archives in Washington, D.C. and College Park, Maryland, normally held in the summer.
- The Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR), hosted by the Georgia Genealogical Society, is normally held in July.
- The Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies. (U.K.)
- National Institute for Genealogical Studies
- The Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy is normally held in January. It is a week-long course sponsored by the Utah Genealogical Association.
Study Groups
Study groups create a collaborative and dynamic learning environment that can enhance learning, motivation, and performance. Group discussions can challenge individuals to think critically about their viewpoints, foster the individual’s analytical skills, and enhance retention and recall.
