Conferences
Genealogy conferences provide excellent skill-building opportunities and advanced methodology learning for specific regions. Look for classes taught by credentialed professionals. These learning opportunities may take place virtually or in person.
- RootsTech, sponsored by FamilySearch, hosts in-person and virtual events each spring. RootsTech provides registrants with a free video library of many recorded presentations for several years after the event and features an Advanced Track of presentations.
- The NGS Family History Conference, sponsored by the National Genealogical Society (NGS), features many skill-building lectures and region-specific presentations. The conference is normally held in May.
- The Association of Professional Genealogists hosts the annual Professional Management Conference and addresses topics of interest to professional genealogists.
- The OGS Annual Conference, hosted by the Ohio Genealogical Society, features a variety of educational opportunities (workshops, presentations).
- The New England Regional Genealogical Conference is the largest Genealogy Conference in the Northeast. It is held every two years.
- The Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS) hosts a national conference.
- The International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS) hosts an annual conference with worldwide focus Jewish genealogy.
- The Ontario Genealogical Society (Canada) hosts an annual conference.
Institutes
Institutes provide in-depth learning in specific regions, record types, or methodologies. These learning opportunities take place virtually and in person.
- The Genealogical Institute on Federal Records (Gen-Fed) is a one week program offering in-depth study of federal records held by the National Archives in Washington, D.C. and College Park, Maryland. Normally held in the summer.
- The GRIP Genealogy Institute provides extensive week-long instruction (virtual and in-person) on various genealogical topics.
The Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR), sponsored by the Georgia Genealogical Society (GGS), provides an educational forum for the discovery, critical evaluation, and use of genealogical sources and methodology through a week of intensive study. Normally held virtually in July. - The Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG), hosted by the Utah Genealogical Association, features courses (weeklong and weekly) in the Spring and Fall each year.
- The Texas Institute of Genealogical Research (TIGR), hosted by the Texas State Genealogical Society, offers a unique opportunity for in-depth, focused learning in a collaborative and interactive environment.
- The International Institute of Genealogical Studies (IIGS) is a year-round trade school offering virtual courses and certificates in genealogy.
- The Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies (U.K.) is an independent educational charitable trust established to provide full academic facilities for training and research in the study of the history and structure of the family.
Study Groups
Study groups create a collaborative and dynamic learning environment that can enhance learning, motivation, and performance. Group discussions can challenge individuals to think critically about their viewpoints, foster the individual’s analytical skills, and enhance retention and recall.
