Study Groups
Four Generation Project Study Group
Four Generation Project Study Groups are held in the Winter and Summer of each year. Enrollment is limited to 12 participants per group. Applicants may start the application process at any time of the year. The Four Generation Project Study Group meets 7 times over the four months of the study group via Zoom conferencing. More details will be given after acceptance into a study group.
Study Group Benefits
- Educates participants on requirements for the Four Generation Project
- Mentors participants as they write the report for one generation of the Four Generation Project
- Provides participants the opportunity to have their work reviewed by a peer and an AG® Study Group Mentor
- Guides participants as they assemble a research log, pedigree chart, family group sheet, and document file for one generation of the Four Generation Project
Application Requirements
- Participants must have chosen an accreditation region and have experience researching in the region
- Participants must have most of their research completed for one generation of their Four Generation Project and have high-intermediate or advanced research skills
- Participants must have experience writing research reports
Application Process
- Send an email to studygroup@icapgen.org stating interest in a Four Generation Project Study Group. Specific application instructions will be forwarded to each applicant.
- Submit a 3-5 page research report written as if to a client
- Submit an outline of the research accomplished
- Submit a basic outline detailing what will be proven in one generation of their Four Generation Project and a list of the sources that will be used
- Submissions will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Readability (spelling, grammar, sentence structure)
- Research is based on original records appropriate for the accreditation region
- Emerging analysis and correlation skills are evident in the report
- Emerging ability to write consistent citations is evident in the report
Applications are reviewed on a first-come, first-serve basis. If the study group is full before an application is accepted, the application will be considered for the next study group.
Fee: $200.00 USD
A readiness assignment may be given to help applicants prepare for a successful study group experience.
Test Prep Study Group
Test Prep Study Groups are held in the Spring and Fall and meet every other week for a total of five weeks. Enrollment is limited to 12 participants per group. Applicants may apply at any time of the year. The study group meets via Zoom conferencing. More details will be given after acceptance into a study group.
Application Requirements
Applicants who have successfully passed the four generation project OR attended a Four Generation Study Group and submitted a project through the Testing Secretary may apply.

To apply, email name, project status, and accreditation region to studygroup@icapgen.org.
Fee: $100.00 USD
Applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. If the study group is full when an application is received, the application will be considered for the next study group.
Disclaimer: Participation in an ICAPGen Study Group does not guarantee that a participant will pass each level of testing. Study Group mentors will educate participants on the requirements outlined in the Guide to Applying for an Accredited Genealogist Credential®, present lessons regarding sound genealogical practices, present appropriate examples, and make suggestions to help improve participants’ writing skills. However, it is the sole responsibility of each applicant to assess whether all the requirements of accreditation are met prior to testing and document submissions.
